Imagine this: it's my daughter’s 12th birthday, and we're at an escape room. I thought it would be nothing more than puzzles taped on walls, but boy, was I wrong. We had a blast! When we exited the room, my daughter casually suggested, "Mom, you should open an escape room."
Now, anyone else might have brushed it off, especially knowing nothing about escape rooms at all but I remembered something crucial. By turning the word “can’t” into “how,” anything becomes possible. It's like unlocking a superpower. So, why not build an escape room? Hmm, How can I build an escape room?
Back at my office, I crunched the numbers and checked the demographics. The idea made sense, but I didn't let my total lack of escape room knowledge deter me. I dove right in. My mom, my daughter, and I, armed with nothing but our enthusiasm, designed and built the escape room ourselves. No contractors, just us. From designing to puzzles to cutting the wood and painting!
During the process, we laughed, brainstormed, and brought our wildest ideas to life. The memories we made were priceless. And the result? We built not just any escape room, but Texas’s largest escape room, The Great Escape and it did exceptionally well.
My goal was to bring it to its peak and then sell it to move on to the next adventure. And that is just what we did.
Here’s the takeaway: Not having experience in something is no reason not to do it. Everything is figure-out-able. Don't let the "I don't know how" mindset stop you. Flip that mindset, IGNITE that mindset, from “can’t” to “how,” and you'll discover your superpower. “How can I build an escape room” How can I build a pool?” “How can I flip a house” No one has any experience until they try.
Soon enough, you might find yourself at a quaint ice cream parlor in a small town, thinking, “We need an ice cream parlor in my town,” hmm “How can I build an ice cream parlor” and the next adventure will begin.
